Depression is the presence of sad, empty or irritable moods, accompanied by changes in feelings and thoughts that significantly affect the individuals ability to function.
Depression is experienced on a continuum. Mild symptoms would have some effect on mood and activity. Severe depressions are more debilitating, for example someone may not be able to get out of bed or feel suicidal.
Symptoms of depression include:
Feeling hopeless
Feeling that life is pointless
Feeling that nothing will ever change (helplessness)
Low esteem, thinking that you’re not good enough
Increased anxiety and irritability
Lack of motivation
Inability to make decisions
Lethargy
Aches and pains
Low libido
Insomnia or too much sleep
Avoidance of enjoyable activities, social activities
Difficulty concentrating
Unhealthy eating patterns
